Former UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the UK COVID-19 Inquiry on Tuesday, June 27, that he was “profoundly sorry” for the deaths that occurred in the country during the pandemic.

“I am profoundly sorry for the impact that had. I’m profoundly sorry for each death that has occurred, and I also understand why for some it will be hard to take that apology from me. I understand that, I get it. But it is honest and heartfelt,” Hancock said.

The former health secretary, who served from 2018 to 2021, was giving evidence in Module 1 of the inquiry, which focuses on pandemic preparedness. He is expected to give evidence in later modules as well.

Hancock resigned as health secretary in Boris Johnson’s government in June 2021 after breaching social distancing guidelines.

Hancock announced he would step down as Conservative MP in December 2022 and currently sits as an independent. Credit: UK Covid-19 Inquiry via Storyful
