Africa in Business: disputes, deals and diplomacy

STORY: Here's what's been making the business headlines in sub-Saharan Africa this week.

1. President Xi Jinping has said China will launch initiatives to support Africa's industrialization and agricultural modernization.

He was talking to African leaders as the BRICS summit in South Africa drew to a close.

2. Also at the Johannesburg event, BRICS agreed to admit six new members.

Argentina, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia have been invited to join in the bloc's first expansion in 13 years.

"The membership will take effect form the 1st of January 2024."

3. Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate resolution of disagreements with Emirates Airline and over visa issuance by the United Arab Emirates, the president's spokesman said.

The UAE stopped issuing visas to Nigerians after Dubai's Emirates suspended flights due to an inability to repatriate funds from Africa's biggest economy.

4. A Kenyan court has given Meta and 184 content moderators suing the Facebook owner 21 days to resolve their dispute out of court.

The content moderators are suing Meta and two subcontractors - who did not immediately respond to requests for comment - after saying they lost their jobs with one of the firms for organizing a union.

5. And finally, the organizer of next month's Africa Climate Summit has said they're expecting deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars to be struck at the event - including increasingly popular nature-based investments.

More than 20 African heads of state and government will be among 20,000 delegates expected at the summit in Kenya's capital Nairobi.
