STORY: Body artists offer tattoos of Rembrandt’s most iconic works

(Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands)

The week-long pop-up studio is located in the Dutch master's former house and now museum

The event has been dubbed 'A Poor Man's Rembrandt'

referring to the low cost of a tattoo compared to a Rembrandt painting

(Henk Schiffmacher, Tattoo artist)

“To own a Rembrandt is something special, but you need a lot of money for it. Even if you want a small little etching or a small little bit, it’s still a big amount of money. So we give you a Rembrandt that lasts you the rest of your days, always stays with you. It is more stable than a relationship, because tattoos last longer than romances. So it stays with you the rest of your days.”

Lillian Ramcharan was the first to get a 'Rembrandt' tattoo

She chose an image of Hansken, an Asian elephant that toured around in 17th century Europe

(Lillian Ramcharan, Rembrandt House employee)

“Hansken is an elephant which Rembrandt drew. It was the first elephant in Europe and we’ve even had Hansken’s skull here in the museum. So I’ve literally seen Hansken, not alive of course, but we used to showcase it.”
