Toronto celebrates Mother's Day with cherry blossoms

STORY: High Park, home to thousands of cherry blossom trees, was open to visitors for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019.

"It's good to go outside, to enjoy the weather, enjoy this beautiful breeze. And today's one of the best days of the year, mother's days," said visitor Irina Ilinia, who came to the park with her daughter.

Like their famous counterparts in Washington, D.C., the cherry blossoms trees were a gift from Japan to the city of Toronto. In 1959, the Japanese government shipped 2000 trees to Toronto.
