Typhoon Rai causes devastation in the Philippines

Footage shared by the Philippine Coast Guard showed parts of the popular holiday island of Siargao, one of the areas where Rai first made landfall as a Category 5 typhoon, inundated with floods and damaged structures.

Rai, which saw winds of up to 195 km (121 miles) per hour before hitting land on Thursday (December 16), has damaged homes and displaced more than 300,000 people as it passed through the western portion of Visayas and mainland Palawan.

Disaster officials on Friday (December 17) were assessing the extent of damages caused by Rai.
