Satellite imagery captured by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on March 1 shows an atmospheric river hitting the West Coast of the United States.

CIRA warned that the event would bring “extreme blizzard conditions” to the Sierra Nevada mountains over the weekend, and the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a blizzard warning for the region.

The NWS said the storm could bring up to 10 feet of snow and wind gusts up to 70 mph to mountainous areas of California. Credit: CIRA via Storyful
