Australian FM seeks to 'wisely' manage differences with China

STORY: Wong said she raised Australia's concerns about human rights, including in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong and the sentencing of Chinese-Australian writer Yang Hengjun in her meeting with Wang in Canberra.

"Dialogue enables us to manage our differences, it doesn't eliminate them but this government in the interests of Australia will always seek to manage those differences wisely."

She added that Australia welcomed the progress of the removal of trade impediments on barley and wine.

Wong also said that Australia will prepare for a visit by China's Premier Li Qiang later this year, but did not give a specific time frame.

The last time a Chinese foreign minister visited Australia was in 2017 and Wang Yi's visit signals a thaw in diplomatic ties.
