“Approximately 21 people were shot, four of those are deceased, that were taken to various hospitals and the ATF and FBI were on scene with us assisting in that investigation. We believe this was a targeted shooting. It was not something that occurred at that location. But there was an individual there who was who was targeted”

“We believe the individual that was targeted is among the deceased. We believe that there was a hit, if you will, to that particular person. As far as you know, someone was willing to pay money to have that person killed. We just have that information from some information regarding in the last few hours an investigation. I mean, that could change. But that's where we're at right now.”

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. (0400GMT) when multiple shooters exited a vehicle and opened fire on a large crowd before fleeing the scene.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond, speaking at a press briefing, said "We believe this was a targeted shooting. It was not something that occurred at that location. But there was an individual there who was who was targeted.”

“We believe the individual that was targeted is among the deceased. We believe that there was a hit, if you will, to that particular person. As far as you know, someone was willing to pay money to have that person killed. We just have that information from some information regarding in the last few hours an investigation. I mean, that could change. But that's where we're at right now.”

The FBI and other federal agencies are assisting Birmingham police in their investigation, and no arrests have been made yet. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward.
