Blowing Snow Causes Whiteout Conditions in Northern California

An atmospheric river storm brought more than a foot of snow to the Sierra Nevada mountains of Northern California, on Friday, March 1, footage shows, with up to 10 more feet on the way, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Footage taken by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 3 shows whiteout conditions on Interstate 80 in Placer County on Friday.

“Avoid mountain travel if possible this weekend,” Caltrans said on X.

The NWS said a blizzard warning would remain in effect for the area until Sunday, with up to 12 feet of total snow accumulation expected in parts of the Sierra Nevada. Credit: Caltrans District 3 via Storyful
