STORY: Cathay Pacific is checking all its Airbus A350 jets after the in-flight failure of an engine part.

It’s canceled around 34 return flights operating over coming days as a result, and says a number of planes will be out of service for some days.

Monday’s news sent shares in engine maker Rolls-Royce tumbling, with the UK firm closing down by 6%.

It’s the sole supplier of engines for the A350 aircraft.

Cathay didn’t specify exactly which part had failed, but said repairs were under way.

A Reuters source said it was a nozzle that directs fuel inside the engine.

Experts say that would be less serious than the failure of a major rotating part like a turbine blade.

Even so, the news will raise concern for other operators of the A350-1000— the largest variant of the aircraft.

That includes British Airways as well as Qatar Airways, which has more of the type than any other airline.

Rolls-Royce said it was working closely with the airline and authorities to investigate the incident.

Other airlines said they had not yet been given instructions to examine similar engines.
