STORY: The festive occasion drew thousands of spectators from across the globe who watched in delight as the Chicago River transformed into a luminous green canvas.

In a tradition that dates back to 1962 and is now in its 69th year, the Chicago Plumbers Union infused the river with 50 pounds of green dye, covering a quarter-mile stretch with a vivid, algae-like color.

The union reassured that the environmentally-friendly dye would not harm wildlife and would maintain its brilliant hue for approximately five hours.
