A crowd cheered as a boy was rescued alive from rubble in Jindires, Syria, on February 8, according to the Syria Civil Defence, two days after a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck across the border in Turkey.

This video released by the service shows the scene. Moaz, named as the child who was rescued, said, “We were in a five story building full of people and my whole family died,” according to the source.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on February 7 that hundreds of families were still stuck under rubble in Jindires after the collapse of about 90 buildings.

The combined Turkish and Syrian death toll rose to above 15,000 by February 9, with the UN’s humanitarian aid agency saying it expected the number to surpass 20,000. Credit: Syria Civil Defence via Storyful
