A Florida police officer was relieved of duty pending investigations after failing to stop and then refusing to cooperate with a sheriff’s deputy who was pulling him over for speeding in Seminole County on June 6.

According to a June 9 arrest report from the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), Officer Alexander Shaouni of the Orlando Police Department (OPD) was spotted going 80 mph in a 45 mph zone while driving an OPD vehicle, prompting an SCSO deputy to pursue him with their lights and siren activated. The deputy had to drive at over 90 mph to catch Shaouni because he did not immediately pull over, the report said.

Footage released by SCSO shows some of the pursuit and a heated exchange between Shaouni and the deputy that followed.

After eventually stopping his vehicle, Shaouni steps out and asks the deputy: “What? I am going into work, my man. Why are you trying to pull me over as I’m going into work?”

“Because you’re going 80 in a 45,” the deputy replies.

“I am going into work,” Shaouni repeats. “What does it look like I am dressed for? What does it look like I am dressed for?” he says, gesturing toward his police uniform.

“My name is Deputy Hilton. May I see your driver’s license?” the deputy asks.

“No,” replies Shaouni, who then gets back in his vehicle and drives away.

Officer Shaouni was facing charges of resisting an officer, reckless driving, and fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer with their lights and sirens activated, according to SCSO’s arrest report.

In a statement to local media, OPD confirmed they were notified of the incident on June 9 and said Shaouni had been “relieved of duty pending the Seminole County Sheriff’s criminal investigation and OPD’s Internal Affairs investigation.” Credit: Seminole County Sheriff via Storyful
