Russia's McDonald's heir growing quickly

STORY: The fast food chain that replaced McDonald's in Russia is growing faster than forecast.

That's according to the owner of Vkusno & tochka on Monday (June 5).

U.S. giant McDonald's closed its Russian venues soon after Moscow invaded Ukraine last year, and sold to local licensee Alexander Govor.

This week he claimed his company serves 2 million meals a day, or more than McDonald's used to do.

It's sold more than 24 million Big Hit burgers - the replacement for the Big Mac.

Govor also said they were reopening restaurants faster than planned - and aimed to have more than 900 by the end of the year.

"The business activity we have created is not going anywhere. We are working confidently with the team. We did not come to make money for six months, a year. We're here for the long haul. So, we will build business processes that will work while we're here and after us, as well."

Customers in Moscow had mixed thoughts on the new brand, which translates as 'Tasty and that's it'.

"For me, the quality hasn't dropped. I really like it, the guys are doing great. They are making the orders on time. The taste, the quality, I like it all."

"I've been abroad and eaten at McDonald's there. I don't think they have managed to replace McDonald's. The taste has changed; the fries definitely at least. I can't say the same for the burgers."

Local authorities have said McDonald's has the option to buy back its Russian restaurants within 15 years.

McDonald's has not commented on whether it has the option to return to Russia.
