Amazon UK to spend $207 mln on staff pay rises

STORY: Amazon UK will spend $207 million on two pay rises for its frontline operations staff over the next six months.

The internet giant, which employs 75,000 in the UK, said on Monday that from Oct. 15, minimum starting pay would increase by at least one pound an hour.

That would amount to just over $14 and $15, depending on location.

From April next year, hourly pay rates will further go up again.

Amazon said its increases mean its minimum starting pay will have risen by a fifth in two years, and 50% since 2018.

The move could catch the attention of the Bank of England which is keeping a close eye on inflation pressures.

Its biggest concern has been the record growth in workers’ pay.

And last month the central bank said this growth was not backed up by other measures of the labor market.

It suggested it expected wage growth to slow soon.

Meanwhile, Amazon UK said it has also started recruiting for more than 15,000 seasonal roles across the UK for the festive period.
