Chester Zoo welcomes a rare Andean bear

STORY: The 10-year-old male has been selected as the ideal genetic match for the zoo's female bear, three-year-old Pacha.

Scientists estimate that there are fewer than 10,000 Andean bears left in the wild, but are hopeful that Obe and Pacha will mate and help to increase the population of bears in the European-wide conservation programme.

Andean bears have become well known because of the children's character Paddington bear, who came from "deepest, darkest Peru".
