India floods: 'I have to start again from zero'

STORY: People in India's northeastern flood-ravaged Assam state have been forced to rebuild their lives from rubble.

In the Bajali district, flood victims gathered at a relief shelter on Tuesday (June 27) with the scarce amount of belongings that they were able to hang on to.

Nabajyoti Talukdar says he now has to start from zero after losing his home.

"Our books and documents have been damaged and our houses have been completely destroyed. We are all living in the relief shelter here. We have lost everything and now have to start again from zero. All our means of livelihood have been lost - we had a fishery, cows, and cattle - everything has drowned in the floodwater."

Meanwhile, in Barpeta district of the state, residents were seen struggling to wade through waist-deep floodwaters.

The death toll there rose to at least five since Monday (June 26) while around 3,000 locals took shelter in relief camps.

Heavy monsoons are a yearly occurrence in Assam, resulting in flooding and landslides which force residents to flee their homes, often leaving behind their belongings.

In neighboring Pakistan, at least 13 people have been killed and 17 others injured in rain-related accidents over the past 24 hours, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said in a statement on Monday (June 26).

Further heavy rain and dust thunderstorms are predicted across the week, Pakistan’s Meteorological Department said.

The country’s monsoon season usually begins in the first week of July, lasting until mid-September.
