Torrential rain in western Sicily caused severe flash flooding that damaged homes, roads, and vehicles on Thursday, November 11, and left many residents trapped and requiring rescue, according to Italy’s national fire service, Vigili del Fuoco.

Video released by the fire service shows firefighters helping people from a flooded house into an inflatable boat. Three people were left stranded in the house, located in Mazara del Vallo in Sicily’s western province of Trapani.

On Thursday, the fire service said it had carried out more than 160 “interventions” across the provinces of Trapani and Agrigento.
