Storm Ida made landfall in southern Louisiana as a powerful Category 4 hurricane on Sunday, August 29, sending a strong storm surge and flooding rain across the Gulf Coast.

Footage taken by Bryce Shelton shows the storm surge in LaPlace, off Lake Pontchartrain, on Sunday afternoon as the storm raged across southern Louisiana.

Local media reported that LaPlace residents who called 911 for a water rescue on Sunday remained trapped because it was unsafe for emergency crews to venture out to rescue them.
