"Yeah it's a little goal for me in the beginning of the year, I wanted to finish world number one and I knew if I did that I would be obviously good enough to qualify for the Olympics but, you know, the title race is getting down to the wire and it's, some weird stuff has to happen for me to finish world number one and, yeah, I'm just really stoked, you know I felt like I almost wanted to tear up a little so, I went and told my dad and I'm just really so happy, can't be more excited to compete in Tokyo."

STORY: American Kolohe Andino surfed his way into the Olympics Friday (October 18) after clinching one of two men's spots on the U.S. squad for next year's Tokyo Games.

The 25-year-old Andino, currently ranked number five on the World Surf League's (WSL) Men's Championship Tour (CT) standings, qualified after advancing to the Round of 16 at a WSL event in Portugal.

Japanese-American Kanoa Igarashi also advanced to the Round of 16 Friday in Portugal and will represent the Japanese team.

Surfing will be a medal event for the first time in Tokyo with the top 18 surfers (10 men and 8 women) in the 2019 end of season WSL rankings earning a spot and then the 22 remaining slots will be decided through International Surfing Association (ISA) events and results from the 2019 Pan American Games.

A maximum of two men and two women from each country will be eligible for next year's Olympic surfing events, taking place July 24 to August 9 at Shidashita Beach near Tokyo.
