Anti-Pipeline Protesters Block Entrance to Canadian Oil Company's Wisconsin Office

Demonstrators rallied outside a Canadian oil company’s building in Superior, Wisconsin, on May 8 to protest a planned pipeline that activists say places the water and food supply for the nearby Ojibwe Native American tribe at risk.

The oil company, Enbridge, recently announced a $2.9-billion “Line 3 Replacement Project” to replace the current pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to Superior. Though the majority of the pipeline replacement would remain on a path built in the 1960s, the new pipeline would deviate from that path near the White Earth Reservation, according to a map published by Enbridge.

The new pipeline could be a risk to water needed for the growth of wild rice, a food staple of the Ojibwe tribe, the Star Tribune reported. Credit: StopLine3.org via Storyful
