Australians assess flood damage as wild weather eases

STORY: An intense low-pressure system formed off Australia's east coast over the weekend has weakened, satellite images showed, but major flooding could continue for several days with rivers and dams already at full capacity even before the latest storm.

"Even though the weather is easing, there is still concerns particularly up north, around Singleton, Hunter Valley, Maitland in those areas. So please continue to follow those orders," said New South Wales premier Dominic Perrottet. He added that of the 50 rescues which happened within the last 24 hours, a number of the rescues involved people still driving through floodwaters.

About 60,000 residents in New South Wales have been told to either evacuate or that they might receive evacuation orders, down from 85,000 residents on Wednesday.
