Many visually-impaired people steer clear of Hong Kong's often violent protests.

But 41-year-old lawyer, Joy Luk, not only joins protests, she also provides on-the-spot legal counsel and even shouts out warnings.

"As a blind (person), I cannot see. So that I use my mobile phone to listen the live broadcasting from YouTube, from Facebook, etcetera, to know what is happening. And then, if I get any updated information as to the deployment of police, maybe I will announce such information to the protesters."

Luk was born with just 3% vision in one eye and lost all sight before she was 30.

She hasn't let that hold her back, she's now an in-house lawyer for a social enterprise.

And she brings that expertise to assist activists.

"I just want to, want them (the protesters) to think more about their legal liability, especially I have also raised some concerns on when they take some particular action, will it damage the others' property. In fact, it may not be a good way to express their opinion."

The pro-democracy Hong Kong protests have entered their sixth month, with little sign of slowing.

Holes and debris left behind can make the city less accessible for sightless people.

Add to that the chaos of street clashes and demonstrating isn't easy for Luk.

However, she says protesters are always ready to help.

She says in the past, Hong Kongers were selfish but that now, things have changed.

"Since the 9th of June, this year, I found that we have indeed a very good relationship with all of the protesters. And I feel there may be a brotherhood and sisterhood among the protesters."

Luk hopes the pro-democracy push could mean better legal protection for the disadvantaged.
