STORY: Magnus Carlsen defeated rival Anish Giri in a back and forth final Saturday (July 4) that saw the Norwegian crowned the first Chessable Masters champ.

Carlsen battled to a tiebreak win in Friday's (July 3) opening day match to go 1-0 up in their best-of-three multi-day final and then put on a masterful performance to easily win Saturday's first game.

Dutchman Giri fought back in the second and third game and appeared to have victory in hand before settling for draws and needing a win in game four to force a tiebreaker.

The 26-year-old Giri again looked to be heading for a win in game four before blundering his advantage away and finishing in a draw that clinched a 2.5 to 1.5 victory for Carlsen and the title.

The world's top ranked chess player collected a $45,000 prize for his efforts while Giri took home $27,000 for his second place finish.
