A monument to former Russian empress Catherine the Great has been removed from a central Odesa square and replaced with the flag of Ukraine.

The statue was removed overnight into Thursday, December 29, video posted by the Odesa City Council shows.

Sergey Bratchuk, spokesperson for the Odesa region’s military administration, reposted video later that morning, showing the flag of Ukraine flying on the plinth once occupied by the statue.

Catherine the Great was the last empress of Russia, ruling from 1762 to 1796. During her reign, she extended the borders of the Russian Empire to include areas of modern-day Ukraine, including Crimea.

The statue to her in Odesa’s Katerynynska Square became an object of derision after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and was seen with a noose around its neck in November. Credit: Odessa City Council via Storyful
