The US Navy has accused a Chinese guided-missile destroyer of carrying out “unsafe” maneuvers near the USS Chung-Hoon in the Strait of Taiwan on Saturday, June 3.

Footage recorded by Lt jg Abigail Russell and released via DVIDS shows the Chinese warship PLA (N) LUYANG III DDG 132 executing a turning maneuver close to the USS Chung-Hoon.

The US Navy said the LUYANG III was observed carrying out maneuvers in an “unsafe manner” during a routine south to north patrol by American and Canadian ships.

The Eastern Theatre Command of the People’s Liberation Army confirmed that the USS Chung-Hoon and Canadian HMCS Montreal had been observed in the Strait of Taiwan on Saturday.

The PLA did not comment on maneuvers by the LUYANG III but in turn accused American and Canadian forces of causing problems in the area, writing: “The countries concerned are intentionally creating trouble in the Taiwan Strait, deliberately stirring up risks, maliciously undermining regional peace and stability, and sending wrong signals to the ‘Taiwan independence’ forces,” according to a machine translation.
