STORY: In the suburb of Mount Annan, homes were decorated with thousands of string lights, fluorescent installations, inflatables and numerous Christmas-themed pieces for onlookers to enjoy.

Dressed as an elf and standing in front of his home to welcome visitors, retiree and local resident Roland McAvoy said spending a month to carefully put his display together is worth the joy it brings to people.

"I enjoy doing it and when I see the smiles on the kid's faces I think it is so good. That's what it's all about in this world, too much sadness, a little smile on a little kid's face makes it all worthwhile," McAvoy told Reuters.

The Australian government on Tuesday (December 6) delayed a key meeting of federal and state leaders called to discuss measures to contain soaring power prices after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tested positive for COVID-19, but power prices didn't bother McAvoy.

"Well most of them are 12 volts so it's not too bad. So it works out around about normal winter electricity bill. So it's not too bad at all. And a lot of these are solar as well so the sun pays for it, not my son, the sun," he said laughing.

Onlookers were overjoyed with the various displays, either driving or walking the length of properties to get a better look and take photos with their friends and families.
