The UK coastguard said two adults and two children were winched to safety after they found themselves cut off by the tide on rocks below Llansteffan Castle in Wales on Sunday, November 6.

HM Coastguard said it was alerted by a passer-by who was concerned about the safety of four people on the beach.

“This family were out for a lovely evening stroll along the beautiful sandy beaches overlooked by the ruins of Llansteffan Castle when they found themselves cut off by the tide and in danger of being swept away," maritime commander George Close said.

A lifeboat rescue team located the family in a “crevice in the cliff below the castle,” but the rocky terrain, paired with the strength of the swell of the estuary, prevented a water-based rescue.

A helicopter was requested and managed to “winch the family to safety,” the statement said.

“The evenings are also getting darker earlier and quicker and we would ask people to bear this in mind when planning a trip, it’s much harder to find your way to safety in the dark," Close said. Credit: HM Coastguard via Storyful
