Danone, Reckitt race to supply U.S. baby formula

STORY: The U.S. has been airlifting in shipments of baby formula amid a nationwide shortage.

Now European firms are racing to ramp up supplies.

Britain’s Reckitt is a major player, supplying about half the U.S. formula market.

It says it’s working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to increase deliveries.

That includes expediting the approval of some products made at a plant in Mexico.

It’s also working with the Department of Agriculture to expand the availability of formula under a program for low-income families.

Danone is taking action too.

It’s the world’s number-two maker of formula, after Nestle, but a relatively small player in the U.S.

The French firm says it’s doubled shipments of its Neocate formula for infants allergic to cow’s milk.

The shortage began when top manufacturer Abbott Laboratories recalled dozens of products.

Experts say the recall has hit numerous markets around the world, not just the U.S.

Danone says it’s ramping up output in the UK to help meet demand.
