Displaced Afghans off to a new life in Australia

The 28 year-old lawyer and widow was evacuated from Afghanistan by the Greek government in October with five year old son Huzhabr and her eight month old girl Gawharshaad, after she became a target by the Taliban for her involvement in supporting women's rights as director of the Pasoon Legal Organization in Mazar-i-Sharif.

For three months she has been cramped in this small room, waiting for the next chapter in her life to begin, this time in Melbourne, Australia.

"When I got a visa for Australia I searched on internet...I saw some video, some pictures, it was really interesting...I am excited now to go to Australia and see...my new life," said the Balkh University graduate.

Greece evacuated some 367 Afghan citizens, mostly judiciary workers, including women judges and lawyers, from Afghanistan in October. It was estimated then that Afghanistan had about 500 registered women lawyers and about 250 women judges.

Forty-one people will go to Darwin, and another 12 to Melbourne, including Neda, via Singapore, on Sunday.

Among them is 35-year-old Maliar Talash.

"This is the first time we are going to Australia so I hope we can settle there and start a new journey, a new life," he said.

22-year-old Mohibo Rahman was also hopeful for a fresh start.

"I am so excited because I start a new life and a new place with new culture and new people."
