Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy delivered an emotional plea for action on gun laws in the wake of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24.

“What are we doing?” Senator Murphy asked, addressing his fellow lawmakers on the Senate floor.

“There were more mass shootings than days in the year. Our kids are living in fear every single time they set foot in the classroom because they think they’re going to be next.”

Senator Murphy then called for bipartisan efforts to “find a way to pass laws that make this less likely.”

“I understand my republican colleagues will not agree to everything that I may support, but there is a common denominator that we can find,” said Senator Murphy.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said at least 14 children and one teacher were killed in the May 24 shooting.

Abbott said the suspect, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, a resident of Uvalde, was dead. “It’s believed that responding officers killed him,” he added.
