Donetsk residents learn about Russian invasion

STORY: Russian forces fired missiles at several cities in Ukraine and landed troops on its coast on Thursday, officials and media said, after President Vladimir Putin authorized what he called a special military operation in the east.

"I'm against the war. I want people in Ukraine to live and be safe, and here and in Russia. I love both countries so for me it is painful", said Donetsk resident Tatyana, who just learned about the start of the military operation.

Shortly after Putin spoke in a televised address on Russian state TV, explosions could be heard in the pre-dawn quiet of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

"Yes, I have heard Putin's speech. That's well done by the Russians' they are helping us, God bless them." said resident Eleonora. "I was born and raised here, all my ancestors are buried here. For me, this city is my Motherland."

Gunfire rattled near the capital's main airport, the Interfax news agency said, and sirens were heard over the city.
