STORY: A bus driver in Canada has been charged with first-degree murder after his vehicle rammed into a children's daycare center.

The incident in a Montreal suburb on Wednesday (February 9) killed two children and injured six others - who did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

Police did not give a cause for the crash but filed murder and assault charges against 51-year-old Pierre Ny St-Amand.

Authorities said he has worked for the transit system for 10 years and does not have a criminal record.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences to the families involved.

“We are all thinking of the families affected by this tragedy. Our hearts go out to them. Nothing can erase the pain and the suffering that these families and that community are going through right now and we will be there to support them in the days, the months, and the years to come as they go through this unimaginable suffering."

The incident happened at a time when children are usually dropped off by their parents.

Authorities did not confirm the children's ages, but according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, about 80 children under the age of 5 attend the Sainte Rose daycare in Laval.

Laval is about 20 miles northwest of Montreal in Quebec, Canada's second most-populous province.
