EasyJet says bookings strong despite first-half loss

STORY: Travel demand at easyJet is strong and bookings in the last ten weeks have consistently been above pre-health crisis levels, the airline said on Thursday (May 19).

It comes as the low-cost carrier reported a first-half loss of $674 million - in line with expectations.

The airline said it would fly 90% of its 2019 capacity in the third quarter.

It also said ticket yields for the fourth quarter are currently 15% above 2019 levels

Chief Executive Johan Lundgren said easyJet was "absolutely focused" on stronger operational resilience this summer.

That after it had to cancel flights around Easter due to high crew absence.

He said the airline had moved more than 1.5 million seats to its best performing markets to meet high demands leisure travellers.

EasyJet said it would not be appropriate to provide any more financial guidance for the second half.

Though it did state that higher fuel and the dollar exchange rate was causing additional costs.
