STORY: Kirby estate in Bermondsey whose residents claim is the ‘the most patriotic estate in the city’ said they decked out their flats to show their pride as their team prepares to do battle in Qatar.

"There is patriotism and there's Kirby estate and I will take that all day long because that means quite a lot to us. I mean, like I said you don't see this anymore, people seem to be scared to put the flag up to show they are proud of the football team and the country they are from. We've never been like that, this is solely about the football, we are very patriotic and as the years have gone on, we have found ourselves more and more patriotic - just to show our support for Gareth and the boys," said resident Chris Dowse.

The makeover is a tradition that started in 2012 and was the brainchild of Dowse together with three other residents who paid and installed the hundreds flags themselves.

Southgate's side reached the semi-finals in Russia four years ago and reached the final of the Euros in 2021.

Victory against France will see them then take on Portugal or Morocco for a place in a first World Cup final since 1966.
