Fatalities after Iran building collapse - state TV

STORY: Abadan state TV showed footage of piles of rubble in the street next to the collapsed building. People carried the injured away from the scene on stretchers.

Footage showed emergency services at the scene of the collapse. The head of Abadan emergency services, Nader Naghibi, said more casualties were under the rubble.

“(The risk is high) because the rest of the surrounding buildings are collapsing,” he said on Abadan state TV.

The semi-official Mehr news agency identified the building as a residential-commercial property on Amir Kabir street in the city, which is close to the border with Iraq.

State TV said emergency teams were being dispatched from other cities to help with the rescue operation, with two teams of rescue dogs, a helicopter and seven rescue vehicles already at the scene.

Video obtained by Reuters showed what the source said were angry Abadan residents running after an official responsible for approving the unsafe building.

The head of Khuzestan province's judiciary has ordered an investigation into the building's collapse, and its owner and the contractor who built it have been arrested, state TV said.
