Firefighters Tackle Over 800 Blazes in 24 Hours as Wildfires Rage Across Italy

Italy’s fire and rescue service, Vigili del Fuoco, reported hundreds of interventions as wildfires raged across Italy last week.

Over 800 interventions were carried out in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday, July 31, Vigili del Fuoco said. They said 250 interventions were in Sicily, 130 in Puglia and Calabria, 90 in Lazio, and 70 in Campania.

This aerial footage shows the firefighters tackling a fire in the Dannunziana forest near Pescara, in the Abruzzo region, on Sunday. At least 100 people were evacuated from their homes as well as a convent and two beaches.
