In the Sudanese city of Khartoum North, a funeral was held for a slain protester.

Mohamed Abdelsalam was said to have been killed in violence that erupted in the country earlier this week.

He was allegedly protesting the military's seizure of power and the ousting of the civilian government on Monday, when he was shot by a sniper.

Several people have been killed in clashes with security forces since the takeover, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and opponents fear the army-led authorities could deploy more force.

A member of the Kobar Resistance Committee Tamam Alaaqeb was among the mourners.

"The martyr Mohamed Abdelsalam was killed on the day of the (coup), that dark day. We were a number of protesters on a bridge and he was targeted by a sniper from (Abdel Fattah) al-Burhan's forces. I accuse Burhan personally that he killed our brother and that he continues to destabilize the security of the Sudanese people."

The Sudanese army is facing widening opposition to this week's coup, with state officials in Khartoum vowing disobedience and activists mobilizing for mass demonstrations later this week.

But Burhan has said he acted to stop the country slipping into civil war and has promised elections in July 2023.
