Heavy Lake-Effect Snowstorm Drops Inches Across Le Roy, New York

Heavy lake-effect snow coupled with gusty wind reduced visibility for drivers in western New York on Wednesday, December 11, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

‘Lake-effect’ snow occurs when cold air moves over warmer lake water, creating thick clouds and generating heavy snowfalls.

One to two inches of snow was forecast to fall per hour, the NWS said. Forecasters said wind gusts up to 40 mph and consequent blowing snow could make visibility “very poor.” The NWS said snow could make roads slippery and create “hazardous” travel conditions.
