STORY: Natalya worked in another steel works, the Ilyich plant. She walked up the burned-out stairwell in her apartment building, showing the devastation caused by shelling.

“I was in the kitchen when the smoke appeared. I started carrying out my belongings, saving what I could. This is the result of what happened,” she said.

She said three neighbours had died in the fighting, but the survivors in her building had been unable to finish burying their bodies as shelling continued.

The remaining residents of the house spent several days in a basement fighting with fire to prevent the basement from igniting, Natalya said.

Once the last of the water supply had gone, the residents collected and filtered rainwater themselves.

She did not know what to do next, she told Reuters.
