A police K-9 who was shot multiple times during an armed standoff southeast of Greenville, South Carolina, in late September progressed with his recovery and was undergoing water therapy, footage shows.

In video posted by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office on October 15, the K-9, named Nikos, is seen walking on a treadmill in a water tank at a rehabilitation center for animals.

According to police, Nikos was shot by an armed suspect during an hours-long standoff in Piedmont on September 29. Local station WLTX reported that the standoff began when the suspect shot his own mother.

“Nikos put his own life on the line in an attempt to get the man in custody and while doing so was shot multiple times by the suspect, identified as Anthony Shay Hawthorne,” the sheriff’s office said. “The suspect was dog-bitten and later taken into custody before being transported to the hospital for treatment of his dog-bite injuries.”

The K-9 underwent veterinary care in Greenville, before returning home on October 4.

On October 15, the sheriff’s office said Nikos was “progressing well” in his recovery. “We are so thankful for all the amazing vet staff who have been caring for him,” they said. Credit: Greenville County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
