Large “blocks of lava” tumbled from La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano on Thursday, December 2, according to researchers at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) who captured this footage.

Later on Thursday, scientists with the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (INVOLCAN) measured lava jets reaching as high as 500 meters.

As of December 1, lava flows had extended over more than 1,163 hectares (roughly 4.49 sq. miles) on the island, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Using satellite imagery, Copernicus reported that 2,790 buildings had been destroyed since the volcano began erupting on September 19. Credit: CSIC via Storyful
