The main cone of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma partially collapsed on Monday, October 25, according to the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan).

Video from Involcan shows what the agency described as a “giant lava fountain” exposed by the collapsing cone.

As of October 24, lava had extended to cover over 901 hectares of the island, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Imagery analyzed by scientists also showed that 2,146 buildings had been destroyed by volcanic activity.
