The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has released dramatic footage from a Dunbar lifeboat showing the rough weather crews faced during Storm Arwen.

In one incident during the storm, an 18-hour rescue was launched after six fishermen called for help when their 100-tonne fishing vessel suffered a total engine failure 70 miles off the coast of Tynemouth, the RNLI said.

Tynemouth RNLI Coxswain, Michael Nugent, who has been with the RNLI for 36 years, said the Storm Arwen conditions were some of the worst he’d ever seen.

“It was an uncomfortable journey home, and even the toughest of lifeboat volunteers can succumb to the elements. I had a great bunch onboard that night and they all did great,” Nugent said. Credit: RNLI via Storyful
