Lockdown a success for the Italy's marine life

Mediterranean marine life is thriving

thanks to Italy's lockdown

Source: Italian Coast Guard

Sea creatures are now more active

thanks to having access to spaces

previously packed with people

Without roaring motorboats and beachgoers

the water is noticeably clearer

and unusual sightings have been made

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) SPOKESMAN FOR THE ITALIAN COAST GUARD, CAPTAIN COSIMO NICASTRO, SAYING:

"At the moment we found an unusual presence of marine species, such as dolphins in the Imperia area, sea turtles between Pantelleria and Lampedusa, also in port areas, whale sightings off the island of Elba. All this has made us understand that the lack of humans has allowed these marine species to go into areas where previously they wouldn't go."

The Coast Guard is hopeful

that time at home has given people a chance

to reflect on their environmental impact
