STORY: Before reaching Zocalo, members of the Otomi, Mazahua, and Triqui groups, amongst others, dressed in traditional garments, walked through the city's iconic Paseo de la Reforma Avenue to bring awareness to their culture and the issues their communities face.

For Sofia Arellano from the Tehuantepec Isthmus, wearing the traditional clothes of her people is an honor.

During the event, people also did traditional dances and played music.

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was created to raise awareness of the needs and challenges that exist in these groups. According to the U.N., the date was chosen in recognition of the first UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations meeting in Geneva.
