Orphaned Baby Wombat Bonds With Carer at Australian Zoo

An adorable baby wombat bonded with her carer at an Australian zoo in Somersby, New South Wales, after the orphaned joey was handed in to zoo staff.

Footage released by the Australian Reptile Park on November 10, shows little Poppy zooming around the park, closely following her zookeeper.

“Poppy was found still in the pouch, with her mum being hit and killed by a car. Thankfully a passerby checked the pouch and discovered Poppy’s tiny, scared face staring back at them,” the park said in a statement.

“Poppy was brought to the Australian Reptile Park, where zookeeper Daniel Rumsey became her new carer and surrogate mum, providing the adorable wombat with around-the-clock care (including a bottle feed at 3 am) and the cuddles she craved.”

Rumsey described the joey as a “true champion,” saying that she is “full of beans and has quickly won over everyone here at The Australian Reptile Park.” Credit: Australian Reptile Park via Storyful
