A school board in Chino, California, approved a controversial gender-identification policy on July 20, according to local media reports.

Under the new policy, teachers from the Chino Valley United School District are required to notify parents within 72 hours if their child asks to be identified as a gender other “than the student’s biological sex or gender listed on their birth certificate,” according to local reports.

At the end of the contentious four-hour meeting, board members voted 4-1 in favor of the policy, according to local media.

The decision comes one month after district leaders banned pride flags in schools.
