Thick smoke streamed into the northern New Mexico sky as the state recorded its largest-ever wildfire on Monday, May 16, local media said.

This footage, captured by Twitter user @RayPhillips207, shows a timelapse of smoke from the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak fire from Pecos Wilderness, a protected wilderness area within the Santa Fe National Forest, on Sunday evening.

The National Weather Service forecasted red flag warnings for the area until Monday night due to the threat of “dry lightning and sudden and erratic wind shifts” caused by nearby thunderstorms.

By Monday, the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak fire burned 298,060 acres (465.7 square miles) and was 27 percent contained, according to local fire reports. Credit: @RayPhillips207 via Storyful
