U.N.: Blocked Ukraine ports 'war on global food security'

STORY: “If we don't get the Port of Odesa open, it's only going to compound our problems, because we've got to get those fields back operational, we've got to get those silos full again but they can't get the silos empty unless we get the ships flowing. It's critical,” he said.

His warning comes weeks after the U.N. food agency had warned that nearly 25 million tonnes of grain was stuck in Ukraine due to infrastructure challenges and blocked seaports.

Ukraine has lost some of its biggest seaports - including Kherson and Mariupol - to Russian occupation, and fears Russia may try to seize a third, Odesa.

The war - and the West's attempt to isolate Russia as punishment - have sent the price of grain, cooking oil, fertilizer and energy soaring.

The Kremlin on Monday (May 23) said the West had triggered the crisis by imposing the severest sanctions in modern history on Russia.
